Venue: Inno center 2D lab
Attendees : Eric , Karina
Recorded by: Karina
Content:
1. Try to make an appointment with the lecture in IVE- Prepare the questions about fog screen before meeting
2. Focus on how to make a fog screen**- Fog recycle- Think about the problem about making fog screen.
3. Interaction- Searching Camera:
i. Camera which can detect depth(maybe called ”depth camera”, e.g. Xbox camera)
ii. Camera can detect Infrared- Study infrared LED light - Study comparison for “motion” change, include: camera, image
4. Study Programming Now we should focus on:- Tracking “ instruments” input and Sound out- Study how to compare the 2 different images for interaction.**
For example: http://www.theowatson.com/site_docs/work.php?id=41
5. General items: Transfer the Yahoo blog into Google blog- Doing project every Tuesday and Thursday
6. We are going to in this 2 weeks:- Study the above issues- Propose questions to ask Ming Ming and the IVE teacher.
Welcome to Eric & Karina's FYP Blog!
We are going to create a new interactive performance with fog.
As we imagine, when we performs some music on the stage, fog are released in front of and/or behind us then produced some visual and aural effects to assist our performance, in order to give a new and real experience to our audiences. after watching, every audience will be very impressive to the performance.

Eric Sharing: Interesting performance using OFs
I search about the performance and OFs, and found this performance by recoil performance group. It is quite interesting that the performer the text(~30:00) and the white/light shadow in font of the projection screen(~23:00).
Eric's Sharing
I found a video about a projection at a wall of a building. I think it can be our reference of our stage projection during performance.
Karina Sharing: Interesting Motion Tracking for Creating Fonts
I found a video was interesting from http://www.whattheflux.com/technology/ballet-font-ligne.
these lights. As the result, they get a series of new font, with some beautiful calligraphy brush strokes. We can go to http://balletfont.com/#/Moves and look the font creation video.
This project is really interesting and beautiful. I hope you enjoy it!~

Karina's blog in week 5
I found a nice video something like what we would do in FYP. Because there is some problem during I embed this vimeo video into here, I share the link:
http://player.vimeo.com/video/14765813?portrait=0"with you!
In the other way, I found a kind of fog machine called "Hazer" which is interesting and closer to what we need for the project. I did some research about it as the following and share with you:
Haze machine
What is a haze machine?
Although the most common machines on the market are fog, there is also another option that has been popular in the theater for several years, haze machines. It is a new kind of fog machine. The major difference between a conventional fog machine and a true haze machine is that a fog machine vaporizes the fluid with heat and a haze machine does it in a compression chamber without heat.
In a haze machine, its fluid is pumped into an enclosed chamber where an air compressor (similar to what you inflate your tires with) blasts the fluid into a vapor, which is then blown out by a small fan in the form of a vapor.
Haze machine combines a low output auto cycling fog machine with a small chamber containing a fan, which could produce much the same effect as a fog machine, but less obtrusive; and a proper haze machine can creates a very fine haze which is used to enhance lighting beams.
Also, it generally uses mineral oil and creates a fine haze that hangs for long periods of time in the air. Newer technology now allows for water-based Haze Fluid. It is a cold process as there is no heat involved. This sound like it would be more suitable to use with the PIR detectors, as the fog produced by a fog machine will be warm and may set the PIR detectors off. There is a worry that a haze machine will produce cold vapor that will also set the PIR off, but as it is finer it is more likely to work. I would also prefer an effect that can relatively unnoticed, as I want the columns to appear solid and still, something that will be ruined by clouds of swirling fog.
There are two ways to make haze: 1. we could use mineral oil, atomized via a spray pump powered either by electricity or compressed CO2, breaking the mineral oil into a fine mist. 2. We could use a glycol/water mixture (sometimes referred to as "water based haze" for the purposes of disambiguation) to create haze in a process nearly identical to that for creating fog effects. In either method the fluid used is referred to as haze fluid, but the different formulations are not compatible or interchangeable.
What are advantages of using haze machine?
- It creates a thinner haze which can be seen when beams of light strike it. It never shoots out a thick cloud like smoke machines for special effects.
- It can be left to operate continuously and inconspicuously.
- It is almost invisible in the air (for the cameras to see through it) yet it picks out light beams like smoke does.
- It gives unobtrusive, homogeneous clouds.
- It suspends in the air intended primarily to make light beams visible or create a subtle diffusion.
- It can hang for long periods of time in the air.
- Some Haze Fluids are water-based which gives cold process as there is no heat involved.
- It is more suitable to use with the PIR detectors, as the fog produced by a fog machine will be warm and may set the PIR detectors off.
- It appears solid and still, that will be ruined by clouds of swirling fog.
What are disadvantages of using haze machine?
- If the haze dense enough, it will produce cold vapor and set the PIR off.
All of the above survey are enclosed in the research part of the FYP project. Thank you for reading!

Eric's Blog and sharing in week 3
In this week, I should mainly focus on researching Openframeworks's addons -- called ofxMidi.
Moreover, continue in researching the fog generator is also our common job in this week. Hope that we could find out a best solution for the projection of our system.
Last, I found out a interesting work done by OFs. See the video below:
This addons is very useful making sound and our FYP should be included it. So I should learn how to use it and put into our project. :)ofxMidi
Midi input & output addon, based on rtMidi and poco events. You can register any class that inherits from ofxMidiListener to receive messages from a midi controller.
Moreover, continue in researching the fog generator is also our common job in this week. Hope that we could find out a best solution for the projection of our system.

Karina's blog in week 3
In this week, Karina:
- updated the FYP blog in Yahoo
- based on previous research on making fog, find the best fog display mechine
- Testing in Eclipse with OpenFrameworks (OF)
This is an introduction of OF theroy:
http://companje.nl/openframeworks/Introduction-to-OpenFrameworks.pdf
and this is an official pdf which teach about CodeBlock(CB):
http://www.sci.brooklyn.cuny.edu/~goetz/codeblocks/codeblocks-instructions.pdf
From this pdf, I learnt the essential techniques and reminds about CodeBlock. It supplied to what I didn't know in pervious testing. For example, before, readme file in CB only teach me that copy and rename a file I need to create a new project, so Ididn't know how to create a new project without any addons. Then I could get from this book(P. 13). Plus, I found I could get better for compile if I clicked a "produce debugging symbols" in Setting (in P.31).

2. Fog machine
a. Based on our previously research fog generators, there are 3 types of them:
i. Ultrasonic
ii. Chemical
iii. Dry Ice/Carbon Dioxide
We found out some drawback of the Chemical fog generator. Some asthma patients/people may suffer from it because of chemicals. So we still need further discuss and research.
REMARKS:
We needs the fog is:
Stable,
High density,
b. New problems come out.
i. What our SCALE of our performance is. It affects what machine should us buy, thus different amount of money is needed.
3. Proposal
a. Deadline we know is 18-29th Oct 2010.
b. We have done more than half of proposal. YES!!
c. We still need to improve or make it detail:
i. Project Schedule
ii. Project Description
iii. Equipment list
iv. Project plan
v. Proposed testing
vi. references
C: Things we going to do in this week:
Further research and libraries testing about Color Tracking and Midi Input/ Output.

1. Update the blog
**2. base on previous research on making fog,
find out best fog for display. more stable.
